Wheel Nut Indicators, Lockers and Retainers are small plastic rings or covers that are used to monitor the condition and tightness of wheel nuts on vehicles. Wheel Nut Indicators, Lockers and Retainers act as a safety visual aid, enabling drivers and maintenance personnel to quickly identify loose or missing nuts before a serious issue occurs. By incorporating Wheel Nut Indicators, Lockers or Retainers, fleet managers and drivers can establish a systematic safety maintenance routine. If an indicator shows a nut is loose or misaligned, the issue can be promptly addressed.

Simple Wheel Safety: Measure, Install and Identify

Measure

A/F Measurement Across the Flats. Using a vernier calliper, measure the wheel nut across the face from flat to flat. Alternatively, use a spanner tightly fitted to the nut and measure the distance between the jaws of the spanner.

Install

Torque wheel nuts to manufacturer's specification. Push the indicator firmly onto the nut (for standard indicators have the numbered (size) side facing outwards). Install in a pattern such as inward pointing, outward pointing or point to point.

Identify

Inspect each wheel regularly for any change in your chosen pattern. Misalignment will indicate a loose wheel nut, damaged, warped or melted may indicate overheating, and missing indicators may mean lost, broken or stripped studs or nuts.

How They Work

When initially positioned in a uniform pattern, any Wheel Nut Indicators that shift position and misalign with this pattern will immediately identify any nuts that have loosened, are missing or have melted due to a wheel overheating, making it easy to spot the issue before it leads to more significant problems. The Wheel Nut Lockers are both a loose nut indicator and a nut retainer plus a lock in a single device. Fitting over all of the nuts on the wheel creates resistance between nuts, thus minimising movement. The Wheel Nut Retainer is a dual-purpose Wheel Nut Indicator with a retainer function fitting 2-links over adjacent nuts. When combined with the maintenance procedures recommended by the manufacturer for wheels, bearings, or hubs, Wheel Nut Indicators, Lockers and Retainers serve as a highly efficient early warning system, seamlessly integrating into any safety inspection schedule.
